Avoid These Foods If You Have Thyroid

The thyroid is a condition in which your body makes either too much or too little of these important hormones. There are several different types of thyroid disease, including hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

What is hypothyroidism?

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland near the base of your neck. It makes and stores thyroid hormones that affect nearly every cell in your body that’s why you should be very careful about your food habits if you have thyroid.

Thyroid Disease: Foods to avoid

  1. SOY:- Too much soy may increase a person’s risk for hypothyroidism so try to eat soy-related products in moderation only. Soy products are tofu, soymilk, edamame, soy nuts and sprouts, miso, tempeh, natto, and soy sauce.

  1. Cruciferous Vegetables: Cruciferous Vegetables are cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, mustard plant, and similar green leaf vegetables. These Vegetables are full of fiber and many nutrients, but they may interfere with the production of thyroid hormone if you have an iodine deficiency. Avoiding these vegetables is not possible so you can eat them in moderation. Avoid eating them raw you can cook them instead.
  2. Gluten: Food that contains gluten is bread, pasta, bread cake, etc. People with hypothyroidism should minimize the intake of food that contains gluten. You should switch to whole grain instead of refined gluten food.
  3. Sweets and sugary Food: Thyroid disease promotes weight gain very easily. so you should be careful of your calorie intake. Avoid sweets and sugary food as this unhealthy food easily increases pounds.
  4. Excess Fiber: High-fiber foods are good for you but too much high-fiber food may interfere with your hypothyroidism treatment. So take 25 to 40 grams of fiber a day more than that may not be good for your hypothyroidism.
  5. Coffee: Too much caffeine may block the absorption of thyroid hormone so you should be careful while having coffee or other product containing caffeine.
  6. Alcohol: Alcohol has a toxic effect on the thyroid gland and suppresses the ability of the body to use thyroid hormones.
  7. Processed Food: Processed foods have lots of sodium which is not good for people with hypothyroidism.
  8. Fatty Food: We all know too much fat in your diet, especially saturated fats, can raise your cholesterol, which increases the risk of heart disease. But people with thyroid should also avoid fatty food because fatty food disrupts the body’s ability to absorb thyroid hormone replacement medicines.
